Day 5- Friday- while the concrete dries...

Well we wrapped up the week with a completed concrete slab for 10 houses! That is very exciting and we are so glad we accomplished this in 4 days, it sure wasnt easy! We started the day just where we left off yesterday, bagging gravel and sand while the concrete was being finished. Today was a hot one! Not a good day to forget my hat, but I knew I had the option of wrapping the t-shirt around my head (I have to do this for Joan before we leave Manila :) There were a lot of kids today too, seems like school may have been out today.

Wow these bags are so perfectly lined up!

So we heard rumors last night that we would be doing the same foundation for the row of houses right next to ours next week. We weren't sure if Jun was serious about this, or if he. Was joking, but when we ran out of sand, we had nothing to do, so I asked what was next. He pointed me to this alley, where the septic system pits were and said, yes, we have to clear this. Wow. Shovel the sh!t over to the sh!tpile across the alley. Maybe would rather do another foundation?

Joan was the funniest, scoping out the scene, looking for the best and most efficient ways before we dug in. I admit, it was an intimidating and daunting task, but you gotta start somewhere. Joan did find us a great wheelbarrow though, and we kept it with us for all meals and breaks to make sure it was not pilfered by other workers.

Lunch meant more fun games with the kids and reapplication of sunscreen, which was so interesting to them. How do you explain to a 5 year old Filipino kid why you are spraying sunblock on your arms?!

Cassandra's makeshift kitty shelter... Sooo cute

The biggest challenge for the afternoon was NOT falling into the septic pit. We put a big dent in the task, but we left a lot for the extra volunteers that will be helping Jun this weekend! I suppose leveling another foundation is better than that.... But it sounds like painting, laying block, and other non-heart-pounding activities will not be performed by us.

We ended the day a few minutes early because of a little rain shower, although it looked like it was pretty rainy all around from looking at the clouds. We told the kids we would be back on Monday (lunes) and said goodbye. A few of us are glad the rain held off though, because we got to have our JEEPNEY ride!
